Course Description

Did you ever wonder why you have to eat everyday, charge your cellphone frequently, or refill the gasoline tank in your car once in a while? These questions all happen to have a common theme – energy! Chemistry is a central science subject that reveals the secret of life and technology. Thermochemistry, for example, is just one of the many very important topics discussed in general chemistry.

In Chem 1410/1610, different aspects of our lives will be utilized in classroom discussions to explore the allure of the chemical world. Before we discuss some of the complex topics, you will learn to build a solid foundation of some basic chemistry concepts such as mass relationships, atomic/molecular structure, molecular geometry, gas laws and reactivity. While our primary focus may be on simple ions, molecules, and compounds, you will ascertain to interpret some macroscopic properties of substances in terms of microscopic models.
