Jeremy Lin’s rise from obscurity to stardom on the New York Knicks grabbed the attention of the nation in February 2012. While the mainstream media heralded Lin as a classic underdog story with universal appeal, Asians in America (not to mention China, Taiwan, and even Korea and Japan) vested Lin with the power to rearticulate the very meaning of Asian/American and end their invisibility. What do the varied mass-mediated narratives and prejudiced reactions to Lin’s success tell us about sports, national identity and the racial/ethnic landscape in America and East Asia?  Linsanity provides resources for reflecting on the model minority myth, gendered and racialized notions of athletic prowess, the politics of sports nationalism, and the hidden forms of racism in our supposedly post-racial society.  The case of J-Lin is a jumping off point for our semester-long investigation into sports as an arena for competition over the meaning of race, sex, gender, and nation.
