Counseling Student Athletes (SIS description)

Description

What strategies can we employ to ensure the college readiness and success of student athletes? What roles can race and gender play in the student athlete experience? What counseling approaches are most effective with student athletes? The answers to these and many other questions will be explored through small and large group discussions, conversations with community stakeholders, individual research, and student presentations.

Learning Objectives

In this course, students will learn how to appropriately support the personal, academic, and career success of student athletes. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and examine several academic, emotional, and career issues that student-athletes may encounter.
  • Analyze cases that involve issues related to the academic, emotional, and career development of that student athletes.
  • Identify NCAA initial and continuing eligibility requirements.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the college admissions process for student-athletes.
  • Analyze and evaluate the multicultural issues that influence the student athlete experience.
  • Compare and contrast select counseling approaches and their use with student athletes.

The following assignments will give you the opportunity to strengthen your cultural competence in supporting student athlete development:

  • Small and large group discussions
  • Case Conceptualization Presentations
  • One (1) multiple choice exam

Instructional Methods

Instructional methods employed for this course include, but are not limited to: lecture, small and large group discussion, guest presentations, and peer instruction. The course is designed to facilitate the contributions of instructor and students to create the body of knowledge with which all participants will leave the experience. To this end, attendance and participation is critical to the growth and development of all involved.
