Course Description (for SIS)

ARCH 5760/SARC 5760 Drawing for Design 3 credits Office Hours: Tuesday ( room 125) 11:30-12:15 or by appointment (pb3c@virginia.edu) This course does the following: -emphasizes drawing from direct observation -explores composition and the figure/ground relationship -promotes finding accuracy through expression.

Course Description: This course covers the fundamental of drawing with a focus on the human figure. The various assignments will address the composition of line, tone, volume, space, scale and proportion. The analysis of the human form will be applied to the rendering of still life, architectural forms and landscape. Various media will be used to convey the drawing objectives with an emphasis on “process.”

Objectives - strengthen hand/eye coordination - instill useful drawing habits - identify and develop personal drawing styles - improve observation skills

Evaluation - artistic growth - resourcefulness - receptivity to new ideas and methods - active participation - regular attendance - preparation

Students will be expected to present their work for review at mid-term and at the end of the semester. Specific dates will be announced.

Attendance - Demonstrations and presentations will be a part of the weekly instruction, so regular, punctual attendance is critical. Students who miss class not only fall behind, but miss valuable dialogue and actual examples of drawing styles introduced each class. Therefore, a strong emphasis is placed on perfect attendance. prerequisite: 3rd, 4th year and grad student in the School of Architecture will be admitted first. If there is additional space, others will be admitted. If you are DENIED admittance, I recommend you come the first day of class to see if anyone has dropped.
