Bennett:  GERM 7420, German Intellectual History II

A survey of important writing in German on philosophy, society, and culture, beginning with Nietzsche and encompassing most of the twentieth century.  Among the authors read will be Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Freud, Buber, Adorno, Benjamin, Dilthey, Heidegger, Gadamer, Habermas.  The principal focus of this edition of the course will be questions of ethics.  It is not meant to be a restrictive focus, but will serve mainly to give contour and direction to class discussion.  Space will be left in the syllabus for texts suggested by students.  Students not from the German Dept. may do all the readings in English translation.
