Course Description (for SIS)

There is almost always more than one way to think about any problem. But could speaking a particular language make some strategies and solutions seem more natural than others to individuals? Can we learn about alternative ways of approaching the external world by studying other languages? The classic proposal of linguistic relativity as enunciated by Benjamin Lee Whorf is examined in the light of recent cross-cultural psycholinguistic research. This class fulfils the Linguistics requirement for Anthropology and for Cognitive Science majors. It fulfils the Theory requirement for Linguistics majors.
