ARAH 9510 Capital cities in the  Eastern Mediterranean
Meets: T 1-3:30 pm

How were capitals built and conceptualized in the past? This seminar examines the making of Mediterranean capitals from Antiquity to the Renaissance.  We explore how power and social status were negotiated based on the cities’ archaeology and architecture.  We also study the role of monumentality, performance and memory in city making. Major cities such as Hattusa, Rome, Athens, Constantinople and Venice will be prominently featured.
