Course Description (for SIS)

What is the sociology of globalization? Is it different from global and transnational sociology? Is it a sociology of “the global”, or of global forces? How should such forces be understood? As structures (and if so, of what kind)? As practices? As ideas? Or is the sociology of globalization better understood as a sociology of global processes (e.g. diffusion)? What are the key spatial and temporal dimensions of the global from a sociological perspective? Does the sociology of globalization necessitate new theories and methodologies, or the revision of existing ones? How do we demarcate this subfield from related areas of inquiry, such as comparative-historical sociology, or the sociology of development? These are the questions that we will explore collaboratively over the next fourteen weeks.
