Course Description (for SIS)

This course will examine the relationship between humanity and the global biosphere from the prehistoric era to present. Its central goal will be to interpret the history of modern globalization as the history of the ecological reunification of the planet. We will use this lens to investigate topics such as pandemics, climate change, warfare, industrialization, energy, land development, invasive species, and cultural conceptions of health, disease, and the environment. The course will employ historical sources, fiction, films, and basic concepts and methods in the environmental sciences as means to analyze global environmental history up to the present and beyond.
