Course Description (for SIS)

The presidency in higher education course explores the historical, conceptual, and contextual components of college and university presidents. Through humanities and social scientific research and case studies, students will understand how the presidency has evolved overtime as a result of specific internal and external influences, including power, legitimizing authority, governance, pathways, change, and institutional contexts. This class will also examine the diversification of presidential leadership as it relates to age, gender, race, professional background, and institutional type. This course is designed for advanced graduate students interested in higher education, history, leadership, presidential narratives, and education policy.
