Course Description (for SIS)

Childhood Learning and Development examines children's learning and development in the elementary school grades. This course is useful for students who plan to become teachers or work with children in other settings (e.g. as tutors, clinicians or program leaders). The content focuses on cognitive development (e.g., the role of the brain in learning, information processing), social and emotional development and moral development. Three themes emerge: developmental processes and contexts, individual variability and diversity, and translation from research to practice. Students will learn about theory and research in developmental and educational psychology, and reflect on applications of their new knowledge to classroom and other developmental settings.
