Course Description (for SIS)

This course explores common health care problems related to ethnic and minority populations. Topic to be explored include health care disparities specific to age groups, issues related to the importance of culture in understanding health care choices, and the role of health care providers as change agent and leader for ensuring equality in the delivery of health care services. Theories and assessment instruments related to cultural diversity and cultural competency will also be examined within the context of historical challenges in minority populations, including issues related to the recruitment and retention of minority participants.  A defined health disparity related to a cultural diversity gap and a strategic evidence-based intervention to address the gap will be discussed.
