Course Description (for SIS)

India’s Partition and its far-reaching consequences may be productively studied from several different perspectives. This course juxtaposes select novels, films, contemporary writings, and some secondary sources to reflect on a few of the big questions thrown up by this watershed and, in a sense, ongoing event. These include the place of minorities, the consequence of violence and forced migration, and the changing nature of center-state relations ever since. We will also pay attention to the narratives that may be crafted out of particular kinds of sources.
