From Baroque to Palladian:

English architecture 1660-1730

This seminar traces English architectural developments in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries as they were intertwined with larger intellectual concerns of power (empiricism and experimental knowledge) and virtue (humanism and the virtuoso pursuits). Conducted as student-led presentations on readings and case studies, this seminar explores the foundational intellectual and architectural formulations in England that, in part, gave rise to Thomas Jefferson’s social and architectural vision.
