Course Description (for SIS)

As part of the University of Virginia’s Teacher Education program’s field experience continuum, you will have the opportunity to work with adolescents in local schools.  This is the second of your two 3882 field experiences. These placements are designed to provide you the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the needs of a diverse group of students.  This semester BMT students will work in classrooms in AVID tutoring settings.  The AVID program is described on their website (www.avid.org) as AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, and it is a college readiness system for elementary through higher education that is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance.  The AVID College Readiness System (ACRS) accelerates student learning, uses research-based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional learning, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change.  In both settings, you will be able to get to know individual students and their academic needs.  You will be tutoring students across content areas, modeling successful school behaviors and helping students address social and emotional issues related to academic work.  PGMT students will work in classrooms with English Language Learners.

Assignments in EDIS 3882 are part of the field experience continuum of the University’s Teacher Education (TEd) program.  All field experiences are congruent with TEd goals across all program areas.  In EDIS 3882, you will focus on the connections between instruction, management, pupil needs, and pupil engagement through direct contact with an individual student.  In EDIS 4882, you will continue to explore these connections, but at a more micro level.  You will teach lessons and manage the classroom and reflect on your own behaviors and the impact they have on students.  In EDIS 5882, your teaching associateship, you will continue your exploration of teaching and learning in schools with a focus on student learning outcomes.  The Field Project, EDIS 7991, allows for intensive observation of students along with an examination of research-based practice.
