In this class, we will trace the representation of female (particularly young female) warriors and heroes, from historical figures (Joan of Arc) to pop culture figures (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Katniss Everdeen) to contemporary real-life examples (Ronda Rousey). We will investigate how these figures are created, portrayed and promoted, often by men, as well as examining their influence in regards to our changing notions of feminism and the nature of "girlhood." Ideas of gender, youth, race, creation, representation, sex and violence will likely come into play over and over again.

Since this is primarily a writing course, we will spend much of our time learning to write effectively, clearly and convincingly about the questions and answers we uncover, as well as exploring the methods of representation applied to these figures in both their original portrayals and in discussions about them. You will encounter a wide variety of sources, both primary and secondary and learn to closely read and evaluate them. Often working in small groups, you will practice revision, rhetorical flexibility, and critical analysis of both your own work and the work of your peers.
