Course Description (for SIS)

In this course we will read mostly relatively short novels and short stories that deal with the experience of modernity in Spain—that is, the strong sense that times are changing and we are different from the past. While this experience may have been identified in earlier times, it is with the 19th century when it becomes highlighted as central to literature, in the vanguards of the turn of the century (19th to 20th). Further waves  of intense modernity will occur in Spain after the end of the Franco period (what is usually designated as “la Movida”), and in the very contemporary period. We will see examples of these three moments, taking also into account painting, architecture, music, and film. Two papers, frequent written commentaries, and final exam. Active class participation essential.
