Class Overview for SIS

This class will introduce students to the study of constitutional law and give them a wide grounding in the methods the U.S. Supreme Court uses to interpret our Constitution.  Students will be exposed to the generally accepted methods of constitutional analysis through in-depth studies of landmark cases both historical and contemporary.  An initial foundation will be laid in an overview of federal judicial, legislative and executive powers.  Thereafter, the course will expose students to the structure of the Constitution’s protection of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties; and will include a study of procedural due process, economic liberties and fundamental rights under due process and equal protection.  A case study method will be incorporated into the class in which students will be reading edited versions of the actual court cases and taking part in discussions of the court’s reasoning.  Each student should complete the course with a solid foundation and understanding of the Constitution and how it is interpreted by the Supreme Court.
