Course Description (for SIS)

One of the central tasks of metaphysics is to say what exists, and this class will look at attempts to answer that question, as well as attempts to get clearer on what the question is asking.  We will be looking at both historical and contemporary approaches to the metaphysics of existence, and will be asking questions such as: Is there more to the world than what physically exists?; What is the relationship between a thing and its properties?; Do some things depend on others for their existence, and if so is there a bottom layer of independent things?; When do a plurality of objects form a unity?; Are there different degrees or modes of existence - do some things exist more than others, or in a different way?; Can existence ever be relative, or mind-dependent, or in some sense not a matter of objective reality?
