Course Description (for SIS)

In this course we will engage with poetry through reading, writing and class discussions. You will learn about the foundations of poetry writing, which include word choice, sound, imagery, the crafting of a line, and poetic voice and style. We will also dive into the differences and similarities between narrative and lyric poetry. This course is writing intensive and you will be required to write during class, to turn in poems for workshop and, ultimately, to revise your poems and compile them into a chapbook.

You will learn how to give feedback on poems and talk about them using terms you’ve acquired throughout the semester. Most importantly, this class will provide you with a community of beginning writers who will be learning alongside you and gathering the tools they will use to grow both as readers and as writers.
