This semester, we will focus on the dynamics of rhythm, in both its perceptual and conceptual aspects.
These include efforts to reconsider the relationships between rhythm notation and performance as action, rather than result driven, as well as current beat-oriented approaches. We will consider rhythm in relation to both historical and contemporary trends, as well as your own compositional practice. You will have several compositional projects that respond to our explorations. There will also be performance faculty visits  and the opportunity to compose a short ensemble piece. Our discussions will be informed by readings in music perception and theory, and by close listening to and analysis of representative compositions, including your own contributions.
