Course Description (for SIS)

Taiwan's China Dilemma: Disputes over identity are an underappreciated factor in the analysis of many countries’ foreign economic policy.  The course examines the economic relationship between Taiwan and China, focusing on the fundamental role of Taiwan's evolving national identity in shaping its economic policy towards China.  This course traces the history of cross-Strait relations since World War II and Taiwan's recent democratization, and analyzes the controversies over Taiwan's liberalization of its trade and investment relations with the Chinese economy.  The course will draw on theories of international political economy and comparative political economy, and on the role of national identity in formulating foreign economic policy.
