Course Description (for SIS)

This course presents an introduction to astronomy and astrophysics with an emphasis on the evolution and structure of the universe. The first third of the course deals with understanding the history of astronomy, orbits, gravitation, optics and the properties of light and matter. The second third of the course investigates how stars are formed, how they live, and how they die. The last part of the course examines galaxies and their contents, the evolution of galaxies, the nature of dark matter and dark energy, and the origin and fate of the universe. This course is intended for non-science majors with a basic high school math and science background.
