Course Description (for SIS)

This seminar investigates diverse perspectives on freedom by way of landmark texts in the fields of Christian theology, western philosophy, and late modern/postmodern critical theory. It engages a number of interests: (a) the relationship of divine and human action, with a particular focus on Christian views of providence, predestination, salvation, and eschatology; (b) sin, the “bound will,” grace, heteronomy/autonomy, and individual and communal self-definition; and (c) analyses of gender, sex, race, and class as they bear human subjection and liberation, broadly construed.
