COMM 2020 Course Description

This course is designed to develop your managerial accounting knowledge base and skill set.  Concepts and techniques are covered that accountants use to produce the information that they, and the business managers, need to make both planning decisions and control decisions. The focus is on understanding why techniques are used, not simply knowing how to use them.

The first half of the course will focus on the wide variety cost terminology, accounting for costs, cost systems, activity-based costing, cost behavior, and the limitations concerning the use of average costs. The last half will focus on the planning and control functions. Planning is covered by topics including budgeting, flexible budgeting, cost-volume-profit analysis, and cost estimating. Control is covered by topics including standard costing, variance analysis and its use in performance evaluation. Finally, relevant costs in decision making will be covered.
