HIEU 2041 – Roman Republic and Empire

This course covers the history of Rome from its founding to its fall. We will study the political, social, and institutional growth of the Roman Republic, with special attention given to its downfall and replacement by an imperial form of government. We will then examine the subsequent history of imperial Rome, including both political developments and aspects of social and economic life in the Roman Empire, until its own decline and fall.

Readings ca. 120 pages per week. There will be one midterm exam, a final exam, and a seven-page paper.
