Course Description for SIS

The primary goal of ENGR 1620 is to introduce you to the fun and challenge of engineering through design experiences addressing realistic, open-ended problems.  As we work towards this goal, you'll add to your technological literacy, and experience and apply the technical and non-technical knowledge, skills, and abilities critical to success in your academic and professional careers.

ENGR 1620 is a cornerstone course for first year engineering students.  They are introduced to the philosophy and practice of engineering through hands-on experience in developing solutions for various open-ended, realistic problems while considering the various technological, historical, and social contexts in which these problems occur.  The engineering design method is the framework for these experiences.  Working through the conceptual design phase and then the design-build-test cycle, they will develop and apply relevant technical and non-technical knowledge, skills, and abilities critical to success in engineering such as problem, goal, and requirements definition; critical thinking; teamwork; effective verbal and written communications; creativity; prototyping; and the role of engineering analysis and optimization in the evaluation and completion of their project(s).  Students will also learn about the various majors in SEAS and the covered domains and applications as part of the development of their academic and professional careers, and receive advisement about plans of study and major declaration.
