Class Overview for SIS

This course explores the fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and drama of 20th Century American writers from TS Eliot to Toni Morrison, and covers major literary periods such as modernism and postmodernism. In particular, we will focus on works that dramatize the American Dream, discussing how this definition is shaped by historical and cultural events, and using these fictional depictions to reflect upon the state of America (and the American Dream) in the 21st Century. Novels include will include Manhattan Transfer, Revolutionary Road, and Sula.
