Course Description (for SIS)

When you think of Africa, what do you see? Hear? Feel? Taste? Smell?” etc. Ebola? HIV/AIDS? Poverty? Genocide? War? How is/are our perceptions of Africa filtered through “race”? How do our complex identities and senses shape our views of Africa, this massively complex continent? As the anthropologist Jemima Pierre points out, “the very production of “Africa”—its colonial history, geographical, political, and cultural mapping, as well as ongoing discursive configurations of the continent’s incorrigible difference—occurs through ideas of race” (2012:5).
