Business, Ethics, and Society (RELG 2630), Cox

“Business, Ethics, and Society” familiarizes students with prominent philosophical and theological frameworks for interpreting and evaluating human activity in the marketplace. In addition to classical theorists, we will interact with 20th century moral and social theorists as well as key Jewish, Christian, and Muslim thinkers. This is not a course in economic theory, economic policy, or management strategy. Although the readings we cover may have something to contribute to these fields, our approach will primarily be from the perspective of moral philosophy or ethics. This means that our focus will be on questions related to selfhood, community, meaning, goods and values, and so on. Our goal is to learn to apply the historical resources of moral philosophy to practical issues in contemporary business ethics.
