Course Description (for SIS)

This course is a survey of Islamic art, architecture and literature in the Indian subcontinent from the 12th century to the 19th century. We will study major monuments, literary classics and masterpieces of miniature painting, with the goal of enhancing our understanding of how Muslim artistic expression developed and adapted itself within a distinctly South Asian context. Through closely examining individual cultural representations such as the early Sufi romances and poetry, the great Taj Mahal, and the allegorical paintings made for the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, the course will aim to identify instances of interreligious sharing and acculturation in pre-modern and early-modern South Asia.
