Course Description (for SIS)

The purpose of the Majors Seminar in Religious Studies is to examine more closely what we have been majoring in and how we have been studying it.  Religion is a multifaceted subject, notoriously hard to define and understand.  Our department covers a lot of territory, with courses in numerous religious traditions and cultural areas.  Some courses examine interrelations between “religion” and other subjects: e.g., anthropology, ethics, history, literature, philosophy, psychology, sociology. Thus the study of religion is naturally interdisciplinary, and each discipline shapes the study of religion according to its particular assumptions, approaches, and definitions.
