A close reading of the 5th century BCE Chinese classic The Art of War [Sunzi Bingfa], attributed to Sun Wu, in English translation.  This course will rely on multiple English translations of the text, supplemented by explanations from key Chinese commentaries, to thoroughly familiarize students with traditional interpretations of the text.  The course will also present the historical and philosophical contexts that influenced the text as well as presenting contemporary Chinese military & business perspectives.  There will be weekly quizzes, a mid-term exam, and a final exam.
