Course Description (for SIS)

This course examines the social and psychological factors contributing to the development of violent behavior in youth, accompanied by an analysis of current prevention approaches. Each section of the course will include a case study to illustrate distinctive etiological pathways to violence followed by an examination of relevant social science research. The ten case studies will include homicides committed by a victim of bullying, a youth with schizophrenia, a drug-dealer, and others. The case studies will be followed by lectures, readings, and discussion on current prevention research. Finally, students will participate in simulated legislative hearings where they will present oral and written position statements on policy issues such as bullying prevention, mental health services in schools, media violence, and gun control.
