Course Description (for SIS)
Mindfulness practice is bringing full, non-judgmental attention to what is happening in the present moment. During the last 20 years, research in social science and neuroscience has shown that increased mindfulness has a positive impact on stress management and reduction, interpersonal interactions, immune response, cardiovascular functioning, and the brain itself. This class provides instruction in four formal practices that cultivate mindfulness: the body scan, yoga (with emphasis on non-judging and present awareness), sitting meditation and walking meditation. A variety of informal practices will also be introduced to facilitate mindful awareness of everyday activities. Students are expected to participate in all in-class practices and discussions with full, non-judgmental attention. Discussions will explore the applications of mindfulness in mind-body awareness, mindful eating, communication skills, business-career contexts, and stress reduction.
