Course Description (for SIS)

ARTH 2559

20th century dialogs in art and film

Lecture: T/Th 3:30-4:45 p.m.

This course examines moments from the beginning of the 20th century to the present when visual art and cinema both joined forces and challenged each other as they looked for new visual languages, discovered new subject matter, responded to changing technologies and expanded their medium possibilities in the process. From the impact of German Expressionism, Constructivism, and Surrealism on early 20th century cinema to the forays into film made by artists (e.g., Andy Warhol, Robert Frank, Bruce Conner) in the post-war period to the rise of film and video installation in art gallery spaces, this course examines how visual art and film have influenced and shaped each other for over a century.
