Course Description (for SIS)

If we stay on our current trajectory, the future does not look promising. Researchers have determined that this generation of children may be the first to live shorter lives than their parents.[1] Our youth are not our only concern. According to the Administration on Aging, there will be approximately 72.1 million older persons in 2030, more than twice their number in 2000. As baby boomers age, there is a looming concern, called “The 2030 Problem”, that there may not be enough resources to properly care for this population.  Chronic diseases are on the rise as well as health care costs.  Many look to physicians for the answers or blame individuals for not taking control of their health.

This class takes a different approach. In this class, we understand that

People make choices about their health and daily lives.

People can only make choices that are available to them in their environments.

In order for people to make healthy choices, healthy choices must be available.

As planners, we are able to shape the environments in which people make choices.
