Course Description (for SIS)

What is the creative economy and what are the skills and competencies that leaders must have to keep it thriving? Using Tom Tom Founders Festival as a case study, this course examines the dynamic impact of melding arts, commerce, and civic leadership and what it takes for an urban center to sustain these elements.

Throughout the course, we will examine examples of innovations in creative placemaking, the performing arts, and manifestations of the creative economy. The course will feature numerous guest speakers from U.Va. and from the broader Charlottesville community. When possible, class will be held at the offices of the guest speaker.

This course also provides an opportunity for students to develop and apply key competencies relevant to the world of work.  As a semester-long project, students will examine a key component of arts management or programming and make recommendations for implementation for an arts-related event or initiative.
