Course Description (for SIS)

This course will introduce you to Anglophone fiction from the Caribbean, South Asia, Canada, and Africa since the year 2000 with a critical eye aimed at the specific histories and cultures that produced them. We will explore how each literary text negotiates an often traumatic colonial past with a contemporary globalized world that seeks to transcend such histories. Over the course of the semester, we will discuss, among other things, issues of gender, migration, nationhood, diaspora, language, and race. In this class, your notions of personal identity, nationality, and community will be challenged as we consider how our increasingly globalized and digitalized world blurs the very boundaries that have shaped much of modern Western and, indeed, world history.
