Course Description (for SIS)

In this course we examine the mechanics of fluids and fluid-related processes occurring at the Earth's surface, including laminar, inviscid, and turbulent flows, drag, boundary layers, diffusion and dispersion of mass, flow through porous media, and effects of the Earth's rotation. We begin with derivations of the conservation equations for mass (continuity and advection-diffusion equations) and momentum (Navier-Stokes equation). Concepts are applied to flows of water in rivers and coastal environments, and winds in the atmospheric boundary layer.
