Course Description (for SIS)

This course will seek to consider four main topics in the burgeoning field of neuroethics: cognitive enhancement, the idea of self, the manipulation of memory, and the elusive nature of happiness. In each of these topic areas, we will read from a variety of sources and viewpoints to consider the theoretical, ethical, scientific, and legal consequences of technological advancements, pharmacological interventions, and cutting-edge therapies. Informed by assigned readings and our own moral reasoning, our discussions will also lead us in the direction of larger thoughts, such as the definitions of self, happiness, free-will, and humanity.
