Course Description (for SIS)

Description

This course approaches drawing as a technical, conceptual and descriptive practice. Drawing principles covered include line, shape, value, space, perspective, surface/texture, and composition using a variety of media.

The class cultivates critical thinking and verbal communication skills, and incorporates art historical references as well as the work and studio practices of select contemporary artists.

Students will gain a fundamental understanding of drawing as a record of witness and encounter. They’ll also understand drawing as a process by which one forms new ideas and fiddles with old ones, and as a method by which one can incorporate multiple senses and disciplines. They will learn that drawing demands close, multisensory perception as well as intellectual resources. Any kind of drawing–from memory, from observation, or imagination–is inherently creative and demands imagination, invention and persistence.
