Course Description (for SIS)

Surveys Islamic religion, history, and the rise of extremism.  Explores the various Islamic empires; the development of sectarianism; radical Islamist ideologies and their authors; extremists' use of the mass media; Muslim responses to the extremism within their faith; and implications for the future.  Attempts to go inside the mind of the extremists to understand how they see themselves, their world, and their fight against the United States.
