Class Overview for SIS

NCPH 109: Our Solar System

During the 20th century, our knowledge of the planets in our solar system went from mere points of light in the sky to whole worlds.  After a brief overview of the Solar System, this course will examine each planet in detail.  Throughout this journey, we will focus on what we know about the planets, and the space missions or ground observations that have allowed us to determine what we know.  On clear nights, the class will spend some time outside observing the sky or using the historic 26-inch telescope to observe celestial objects.  Please dress appropriately for the outdoor observing.

Instructor: Edward Murphy is an associate professor in the University of Virginia Department of Astronomy. He received both his MA and PhD in astronomy from the University of Virginia.

Tuesdays, 7-9pm, September 16 – November 11 (no class October 7) at the UVa McCormick Observatory.
