Course Description (for SIS)

ASTR 3480 Introduction to Cosmology is a descriptive course covering some of the most exotic aspects of modern physics and astronomy: special and general relativity, black holes, the nature of space and time, the big bang.  The course begins with an historical review of cosmological thought and the development of the physics of motion through Newton.  The application of Newtonian mechanics to the celestial realm provides the basis for the first scientific cosmology.  Next we consider Einstein's theory of relativity and its implications for our understanding of space and time.  The Big Bang cosmological model grows out of the application of general relativity to the universe as a whole.  We review the recent astronomical discoveries that have led to today's accelerating universe model.
