American Historiography, Jefferson to Henry Adams

ENAM9500. American Historiography.  Jefferson to Henry Adams.  The course will examine key texts of American historiography from Jefferson to Henry Adams.  The works to be studied include pivotal historical works by Irving, Parkman, and Black Elk, memoir accounts such as Gray's Confessions of Nat Turner, James’s The American Scene, and Adams’ The Education of Henry Adams, and historical and poetical fictions including works by Cooper, Delany's Blake, and Whitman's  Song of Myself.  The course will track how American writers of various kinds sought to represent and respond to the emergent American empire.  It will investigate key American ideological formations and issues  (progress, american Exceptionalism, individualism, enlightenment, race, the cultural function of literature).
