Course Description (for SIS)

Learning is the way that we create a repository of stored memories, skills, and knowledge of our world.  When this store is put into action, change occurs.  The change can be manifest in understanding how to add a column of numbers, how to build a better mousetrap, or how devise good educational policy. As such, knowing how to understand and alter learning patterns is a fundamental mechanism for social change and innovation.    Each student in this class will work once a week as a tutor to a school student in Charlottesville through a tutoring program approved by the instructor.  We emphasize the cognitive, motivational, and behavioral aspects of learning that need to be considered as our tutors seek to engage tutees in active learning.
