Course Description: First popularized in America in the 1970s, “Yoga” has been firmly established in the West as a practice leading to better health and a calmer mind.  Today yoga classes are found at many gyms and fitness centers, and there are hundreds of studios dedicated to this practice throughout the country.  While most of us think of yoga as a series of physical postures for the body, the full yoga practice, as described by Patanjali in his classic text on the yoga sutras, describes eight “limbs” of yoga, of which asana (postures) is only one.  This class explores yoga both academically and practically as it is experienced in each of these eight limbs, and examines some of the more profound benefits of a full yoga practice on body, mind and spirit.

Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes: To expose students to all eight limbs of classical yoga and the end goal of a yoga practice.  The course will also give students opportunities to experiment with these practices and to incorporate yoga "beyond the postures" into daily life.

Required text: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Sri Swami Satchidananda (any edition is acceptable)

Suggested Texts:  Other Yoga Sutra commentaries; The Living Gita by Sri Swami Satchidananda
