Course Description (for SIS)

This course is for third- and fourth-years who enjoy writing, have had some success as writers (either in classes or in extracurricular activities), and think they might like to pursue a career in which writing features prominently. If you enroll, you will create and begin to stock an online portfolio, which will allow you to share some of the best work you have done in the past and also help you locate paying work in the future. During the course of the semester, you will: 1. learn some eminently marketable skills, such as proofreading, summarizing, and abridging; 2. create job-seeking written materials, including a resume, a LinkedIn page, and cover letters; 3. tackle a series of writing tasks, all of which have some “real-world” relevance, including writing a press release, a book review, a movie review, a restaurant review, an op-ed/opinion piece, and conducting and editing an interview with a writer; and 4. create or revise several pieces for inclusion in an online portfolio. The focus will be on writing, rather than reading; on non-fiction, rather than fiction or poetry; and on genres with high real-world relevance, rather than the traditional academic essay. You will also have a chance to meet and learn from a number of guest lecturers who are published writers.
