3120 Abnormal Psychology: Course Description

This course provides a broad overview of developmental psychopathology (abnormal psychology) – initially focusing on understanding basic concepts, historical context, developmental influences, theoretical perspectives, research methodology, and issues related to classification and assessment – followed by comprehensive information concerning major disorders (e.g., ADHD, major depression, anxiety, ASD, schizophrenia). The major psychological disorders and their DSM-5 classification across the lifespan will be surveyed within a developmental and normative framework. The etiology and treatment of the major disorders are explored from various theoretical perspectives, with a focus on evidence-based assessment and treatment, differential diagnosis, and nosological classification. The onset, course, duration, outcome, response to treatment, and familial, psychosocial, and biological correlates of each psychological disorder will be covered.
